Welcome!
We are an inclusive group of mothers, grandmothers, and other community members working to build a sustainable and socially just future. We believe that change starts locally, and we want Somerville to lead by example in climate action and innovation. We prioritize environmental justice for communities in our city coping with disproportionate pollution and environmental risks.
Some of us are seasoned activists; others are new to this. We welcome you to join us regardless of your experience, skills, or time available to help. We believe everyone has something valuable to contribute, and we provide multiple ways to get involved.
Our Local Campaigns
Clean Air
Mothers Out Front has been the leader in identifying gas leaks in Somerville, holding utility companies accountable for fixing them, and pushing our elected officials to more comprehensively address the issue of piped methane gas. Our advocacy work has included identifying gas leaks along Somerville Avenue near Porter Square and along Pearl Street in East Somerville. Read more.
Opt-up to 100% Renewable Energy
The Somerville Chapter has been instrumental in promoting and raising the ambition of the Somerville Community Choice Electricity (CCE) program, which provides an extra 10% of clean electricity to all homes in the city, as well as an affordable, reliable way to opt up to 100% clean electricity. As a mother, I am deeply concerned about our children’s health and safety. I often tell my son that it’s my job to keep him safe, but these days I can’t promise him healthy air and a safe, livable climate. Shouldn’t we be able to offer our kids that? The reality of the climate crisis is that it’s here. It’s no longer about our kids’ future. It’s about their present! Children are suffering from the consequences of our fuel choices today. It’s time to transition to clean renewable energy NOW. “
