In honor of the 6th annual California Clean Air Day that took place on October 4, Mothers Out Front’s Silicon Valley, California chapter came together to take action and strengthen its community bonds. Their bilingual event, “Healthy Air, Healthy Kids – Aire Sano, Niños Saludables,” was a resounding success thanks to the incredible support from our co-sponsors, selling out with 200 pre-registered attendees. It was an evening filled with inspiration, education, and a shared commitment to improving air quality.
The family-friendly event featured some incredible prizes, children’s activities, presentations and opportunities to come together as a community.
Generously Donated Air Purifiers for the Community
As a highlight of the event, 25 households in neighborhoods with disproportionately higher air pollution received free air purifiers, generously donated by Acterra and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD). These devices will have a significant impact on improving the air quality in these communities, as well as enhancing the health and well-being of the families. Other prizes awarded included an induction cooktop and nature-themed calendars.
Distinguished Guest Speakers
We were honored to have a lineup of distinguished guest speakers. Jonathan “Jay” Davis, Communications and Policy Aide for San José District 5 Councilmember Peter Ortiz, kicked off the evening and Assemblymember Ash Kalra, representing California’s 25th Assembly District, wrapped it up. Also in attendance were Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez and a representative for State Senator Dave Cortese.
Informative Bilingual Presentations ️
The evening centered on informative bilingual presentations addressing crucial issues related to air pollution and its health impacts, particularly on children. Mothers Out Front Silicon Valley’s Team Leader Linda Hutchins-Knowles, Acterra’s E-Mobility Advocate Irvin Rivero, and San José Clean Energy’s Public Information Representative II Sarai Rojas shared practical strategies for improving indoor and outdoor air quality and tips for accessing valuable rebates that lower the cost of electric appliances and electric vehicles by thousands of dollars. Participants were also invited to support Mothers Out Front’s campaign for equitable EV charging for apartment and condo residents.
Delicious & Sustainable Dining
Our guests were treated to a scrumptious vegetarian taco buffet courtesy of Joe’s Taco Shop & Catering. What’s even more fantastic is that the food was served on sustainable stainless steel provided by Dubara, embodying our dedication to sustainability and eco-friendliness.
This event was made possible by our 16 co-sponsors, including Coalition for Clean Air / CA Clean Air Day who gave us a microgrant for event expenses, San José Clean Energy (SJCE), City of San Jose and Parks and Recreation, BAAQMD, Acterra, Dubara, Veggielution, D5 United, 350 Silicon Valley, Breathe CA, Climate Health Now, SF Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Peninsula Food Runners, Valley Verde, Senator Dave Cortese and Assemblymember Ash Kalra.
We are filled with gratitude for the wonderful turnout, support, and enthusiasm shown at our California Clean Air Day event. It’s a clear sign that our community cares deeply about cleaner air and a healthier future. Mothers Out Front looks forward to continuing our climate justice work together and making a lasting impact on air quality and climate justice in our beloved San José and beyond. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this event a tremendous success!
