Gina Carey, a dedicated member-leader and attendee, expressed, “I truly loved the Training for Trainers program. The content pushed the boundaries of my perception of leadership and what I’m capable of achieving as a volunteer and organizer, and I appreciated the investment Mothers Out Front made in our skill-building as a group. I left the training feeling capable and connected to an amazing community.”

Marie-France Watson and her family moved to Texas three years ago from the Seychelles Islands, where she grew up, her two sons were born, and is currently being threatened by rising sea levels. Growing up as a native islander, Marie-France was not introduced to the idea of sustainability. She says, “It was simply a way of life.” Picking mangoes straight from the tree, capturing rainwater in barrels, and feeling connected to their natural environment. That connection deepened when Marie-France became a mother. Watching her son, Theo, play in the ocean when he was three years old, imitating a starfish, she suddenly wondered what the world would be like for him as an adult. Would he enjoy moments like this with his own children?

Over time, that spark led Marie-France into conservation work, protecting her homeland’s coastal wetlands, and her current consulting work, raising awareness about plastic pollution’s impact on island economies an health.

When she came across Mothers Out Front, it felt like the perfect fit. In January, she hosted her first house party, and her fledgling team is interested in making their school greener by working on a Sustainable Schools Resilient Communities campaign.

Sonja Tengblad is a member of the Mothers Out Front East Boston chapter in Massachusetts. When Sonja’s son Soren was born, the weight of climate anxiety left her feeling hopeless and discouraged. However, she soon met other moms from Mothers Out Front, who inspired her to take action in her community. Sonja continues to be inspired by what her team has accomplished, including a climate-themed family opera and a Mother’s Day art build that brought together 200 families. Now, Sonja’s team is focused on improving air quality in schools by advocating for HEPA filters. The relationships she’s built with team members, legislators, and other stakeholders motivate her to continue working towards a healthier community and are proof that you can make a significant impact locally even during challenging times.

Laura Van Vertloo is from Ames, IA, and has a deep love for nature. After her twins were born, she began educating herself on her family’s environmental footprint and how to make lifestyle changes to reduce their impact. After the most recent elections, Laura decided to take her advocacy event further.

Last fall, Laura attended her first Mothers Out Front event. She went on to host her first house party in January. Laura considers herself shy and introverted, but she’s found encouragement and support through the Mothers Out Front network. She found that hosting the house party was empowering and feels excited to connect with more like-minded individuals in her central Iowa community. Laura is currently building a team and hoping to start a food waste diversion program in public schools.

Bobby Monacella began her climate journey because of her mother. Before her mom took to the streets or joined an organizing call, she marched and advocated for climate justice, modeling what it means to stand up for what you believe in. From a young age, Bobby’s mom taught her family that when something matters, you raise your voice.

Bobby said, “Advocacy wasn’t unusual or intimidating in our home—it was just what we did. When I became a mom and shared my fears about the climate crisis, she gently challenged me: “What are you doing about it?” She reminded me that action brings hope—and, as usual, she was right.”

Her example shaped Bobby and her children’s lives. Her oldest child took on leadership roles with the Sunrise Movement, and her youngest became a plaintiff in an Our Children’s Trust climate lawsuit. “Watching my mother’s ‘make good trouble’ spirit ripple through generations has been one of the loveliest and most powerful gifts of motherhood for me,” Bobby shared.

Recently, we had the privilege of interviewing Liz Phebus a member of Mothers Out Front Pueblo, Colorado about the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation in the climate justice space.

Liz joined Mothers Out Front to make a tangible impact in her community. Initially drawn by her involvement with Clean Air Pueblo and No Nuclear Pueblo; groups that celebrate and welcome voices from all walks of life. Liz highlights the depth of their commitment to advancing climate justice. To Liz, being a mother transcends the traditional definitions.

“Although I am not a mother yet, I do not see myself as independent from the obligation to protect today’s children and the future generations. To me the word mother means protector. It is an innate responsibility to assume the role of the protector and action taker. It is doing what must be done and saying what needs to be said while staying true to the core of it all, deep unshakeable love for our children and our earth. I often think of what has been found in archeology and historical studies of the matriarchal societies that once existed, where matriarchal values were at the forefront. Centering of women, children, and elders and the community as a whole having reciprocal practices that sustain both the community and the environment. I believe all mothers and caretakers who are standing for environmental justice and human rights are upholding the matriarchal values of long ago.”

How does your LGBTQIA+ identity intersect with your passion for climate justice?

“As I witness the history of resistance that gave me my rights as a queer person today, I am reminded of the roots of Pride. Led by Black and Indigenous Trans Women, pride began as a protest, and the foundations of the environmental justice movement also started with Black and Indigenous people. This is the intersection for me, my marriage to my wife, my job, my community, and our activism is because of people of color. The foundations for my activism & queer rights were paved by the most severely impacted communities because they had no other choice but to raise their voices, take to the streets and resist. Their identities, lives, homes, and families were at stake and still are. To them it wasn’t a responsibility to resist, it meant life or death. I do the work that I do in the way that I do because the BIPOC community is still facing the same issues today, and I owe everything I have, and everything I can do, to them.”

Can you share any personal experiences or insights about the unique challenges faced by queer individuals in the context of the climate crisis?

“Something I think we need to remember when having conversations about queer liberation and environmental justice is that Indigenous 2 Spirit people are continuously going missing; often mentioned as missing and murdered Indigenous women and 2 Spirit people (MMIW2S). Gender-based violence, including sexual assault and physical violence, is committed against 78% to 85% of Indigenous 2 Spirit individuals. It is directly related to industrial development on or near indigenous land, which not only further contaminates the land, but often involves the oil industry and exacerbates climate change. Due to outdated policy on tribal sovereignty, it is almost impossible to hold perpetrators accountable which leads to them feeling empowered in their violence towards Indigenous women and 2 Spirit individuals.

Queer liberation cannot be separated from Indigenous Liberation and land & tribal sovereignty, without it, we cannot have environmental justice either, because protecting Indigenous people is environmental justice. Indigenous people make up 6% of the global population yet they protect 80% of the Earth’s biodiversity. The movement for a liveable climate must incorporate indigenous knowledge and a pathway to healing and reparations for those who knew how to work with the land reciprocally and sustainably for thousands of years. Many Indigenous 2 Spirit people were killed throughout colonization and are still being targeted, while a person like me a white lesbian, can remove themselves from experiencing that reality. The violence we see inflicted on Indigenous 2 Spirit people is a direct reflection of the violence inflicted on the land and climate by the fossil fuel industry.

In addition to 2 spirit people, communities of color are at the forefront of the climate crisis, and the queer liberation movement. Black trans women and men face the most violence because of their identity and they are more likely to live in areas that have been sacrificed to industry, lack green spaces which is crucial for reducing the heat island effect, and are most likely to lose resources like water. Due to the intersections of being trans and people of color, Black Trans Women and Men have the highest risk for violence both in climate and LGBTQIA+ identity.”

How can we ensure that the broader climate justice movement remains inclusive and supportive of queer individuals and their unique perspectives?

“Center those who live at the intersections. They can provide insight into both queer and environmental justice from the perspective of the most affected. They have stories that go beyond what I have experienced myself, with a tremendous opportunity for us to see the bigger picture.

Recognizing that Queer people are everywhere, including in the Congo where all of the Coltan used in the electrification of our vehicles and tech comes from. We cannot just be supportive of queer individuals and perspectives from within our country. We must advocate for the safety and well-being of all queer people, not just the drag queens on tv, not just the people you see at your local pride parade–but all over the world. And we need to recognize that they are simply just people and you will most likely not ever know they are queer, but if we are fighting for queer rights and environmental justice, then we have an obligation as protectors to protect everyone, and everyone’s children, not just the children here in the United States, and if our green energy movement is using minerals that are obtained through violence and desecration to the land and people, then no we are not being inclusive to the international LGBTQIA+ community or international environmental justice.”

Recently, Julie Mowrey our Digital Media Manager had the privilege of speaking with Valinda Chan about the importance of AAPI representation in the climate justice space.

Growing up Valinda witnessed the disproportionate impacts of air pollution, housing displacement, and food insecurity. Today living in East Boston, Valinda sees similar issues facing their family’s community.

Valinda is a passionate organizer and advocate who works at the intersection between environmental, racial, economic, health, and housing justice. Valinda’s work has focused on supporting their community as a leader of Mothers Out Front East Boston, Mutual Aid Eastie, and a founder of the Logan Community Clean Air Coalition. Through practical interventions such as installing air quality sensors to collect data and air purifiers in home daycare centers, Valinda takes an approach that unifies diverse perspectives to address the impacts of air pollution beyond climate and environmental spaces.

Here, Valinda shares how becoming a parent spurred their clean air work, and how important community is to change-making work and family well-being.

—

My AAPI identity is intrinsically linked to my passion for climate justice and language justice. Growing up as the child of immigrant parents in a community where inequities were normalized, I witnessed firsthand the disproportionate impact of environmental and social issues on communities of color. My family and I faced high levels of air pollution in our homes and schools, struggled with forced displacement, and experienced food insecurity among other challenges.

These experiences highlighted the urgent need for equitable solutions that address the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. Living in East Boston today, where the majority of residents are Latino and many are immigrants, I see the parallels with my own background and the importance of ensuring that all marginalized voices are heard and addressed in climate justice efforts.

Additionally, my commitment to language justice plays a crucial role in my work, as I strive to make information accessible in the languages spoken by the most marginalized in our communities to make sure we are being truly inclusive in our work.

To ensure inclusivity in the climate justice movement, it’s essential to amplify AAPI voices and other marginalized groups in meaningful ways. This includes providing platforms for marginalized voices, addressing burdens faced by community members, and creating culturally relevant materials and community spaces. Building partnerships with AAPI organizations and community leaders is also crucial, fostering collaboration and mutual support. By prioritizing diversity and inclusivity, the movement can better reflect and address the needs of all communities, ensuring that everyone has a voice and a stake in the fight for climate justice – especially those most affected, including AAPI community members.

To those interested in climate activism, I would say that every voice and action counts. Climate justice is interconnected with many other forms of justice, so co-create and advocate for solutions that are inclusive and equitable.
